'D-Day off Ventnor' has raised 718 for the Royal British Legion   ()

Sales throughout the town of the official Commemorative Booklet for ‘D-Day 75 off Ventnor’ have raised the sum of £718 for the Royal British Legion.  Of the 1,000 Booklets that were printed, an initial 320 of these were shipped in advance to the MV Boudiccafor distribution to each of the 300 Veterans gratis who would be at sea to follow the Commemoration ashore at Ventnor, for strategic carers and for the Captains of MV Boudicca and HMS St Albansto co-ordinate their standing-off the Ventnor coast for sunset on 5 June 2019.  Two Booklets were sent to Her Majesty The Queen to accompany her role in Portsmouth.  Four were distributed to explosives and logistics technicians to conform to safety requirements.  Of the 674 Booklets remaining for sale at £1 each, the townspeople of Ventnor bought every single one, raising not only the £674, but over and above that, and extra £44 in donations.  The sum of £718 is on its way to the RBL National Commemoration Team at Haig House in London.

A great debt of gratitude is owed especially to those establishments throughout the Town and along the Esplanade who hosted the sale of the Commemorative Booklet.  It is the townspeople of Ventnor whose outstanding generosity in raising the £718 will serve to continue to address some of the legacy of that great enterprise which passed out shores heading for the Normandy beaches in 1944 and which was to result in nothing less than the liberation of Europe.

  D-Day 75 off Ventnor - update 5 June 2019   ()

Upon Arrival off the Ventnor coast before sunset Royal Navy guardship HMS St Albans accompanying MV Boudicca with 300 D-Day Veterans aboard, signalled Ventnor by Aldis Lamp with flashing morse: "We acknowledge the Townspeople of Ventnor assembled for D-Day 75 commemorations and their Wartime contribution".  Following the commemorative prayers ashore conducted by Churches Together in Ventnor, concluding with the sounding of Evening Colours, HMS St Albans flashed a parting message on behalf of the Flotilla: "Farewell and God speed - we'll meet again".  The ships then sheered away over the horizon and made for the Normandy beaches overnight.
